MIC, a component of Sevin, was manufactured here. Union Carbide made drastic cuts in safety measures due to poor revenues in 1983 and 1984, and eliminated critical refrigeration of MIC in order to save $40 a day. This was one of several negligent actions, which contributed to the disaster.
