ELLIS ENGLESBERG

Ellis Englesberg was born in Brooklyn, New York and at present resides in Santa Barbara, California with his wife Gail Embree Englesberg. He is a Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Barbara and has published numerous papers in the fields of Microbiology and Genetics. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Ellis has been interested in the interaction between art, science and society for most of his life. His artistic ideas and social concerns stem from growing up during the great depression and the events leading up to WWII. He has been an ardent collector of art from socially responsible artists. He established the Guernica Gallery of Graphic Arts in Santa Barbara, California (1992-1994) and subsequently guernicagallery.com both institutions dedicated to encourage and support artists who express through their art the social, political and economic issues of the times.
