ILSE SCHREIBER-NOLL

Ilse Schreiber-Noll, born in Germany, studied at the University of Marburg, Germany, then came to the United States and studied at Purchase College, SUNY, NY from which she received her Masters in Fine Art in 1989. Her work has mostly dealt with the concerns of society and the fight for peace and social justice with emphasis on the tragedy of war. Her ideas are expressed in large-scale woodcuts, paintings and painted books. She was an active participant in several major political movements among them "Artist's Call", "Art Against Apartheid" and "Artist's Against the Death Penalty" and most recently in the efforts to close Indian Point, a nuclear plant in New York.
Next to her political work she is known for her collaborations with contemporary poets with whom she produced Limited Edition Artist Books. She also has done extensive work for the theatre usually dealing with plays of German playwrights such as Bertolt Brecht and Frank Wedekind and worked in close collaboration with playwright, director and translator Eric Bentley. Some of the poets and musicians she has collaborated with are: Joseph Brodsky, Galway Kinnell, Octavio Paz, Dennis Brutus, John Cage, Margaret Leng Tan and others. Her work has been widely exhibited and published and can be found in major collections.
At the present time she teaches at Purchase College and lives in Tarrytown, New York and often in Germany.
